What To Do in a Dental Emergency
While you’re on your way or waiting for your same-day emergency dental appointment, these tips can help:
- Call our office right away so we can reserve an emergency slot and give you case-specific advice
- For a knocked-out tooth:
- Gently rinse it with water (don’t scrub the root)
- Try to place it back in the socket if you can
- If not, keep it moist in milk or your saliva—do not let it dry out
- Rinse with warm salt water to help keep the area clean
- Use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed (never place aspirin directly on your gums or tooth)
- Avoid chewing on the affected side and stick to soft, lukewarm foods
- Bring any broken pieces, crowns, or dentures with you
Most dental emergencies can be treated successfully when we act quickly. The earlier you call, the better your options.

What To Expect at Your Emergency Dental Visit
Calm Welcome and Quick Assessment
We start by listening to what happened and how you’re feeling. Then we examine the area and, when needed, use:
- Digital X-rays
- Intraoral photos
- AI-supported screening tools
You’ll see what we see on a large screen, so the problem makes sense, not just the symptoms.
Clear, Simple Plan
Next, Dr. Zurcher explains:
- What’s going on
- Your same-day options
- What each option costs and how long it will take
If you’re anxious, we’ll also review sedation choices so you can feel calmer during treatment.
Same-Day Treatment Whenever Possible
In many cases, we can complete treatment the same day, such as:
- CEREC same-day crowns for broken or cracked teeth
- Same-day fillings to repair fractures or cavities
- Extractions when a tooth cannot be saved
- Drainage and antibiotics when infection is present
The goal is to get you out of pain, stabilize the tooth or area, and avoid repeat emergencies.
Aftercare and Next Steps
Before you leave, you’ll get:
- Written aftercare instructions
- Medication guidance, when needed
- A clear follow-up plan for any additional work
We’ll check on you as you heal and make it easy to schedule any remaining treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have a dental emergency after hours?
If you have severe swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the nearest emergency room right away. For other urgent issues after hours, leave us a message—we’ll contact you as soon as we’re back in the office and work to get you scheduled quickly.
Can I come to you for an emergency if I’m not already a patient?
Yes. We welcome new emergency patients, and you don’t need to be established at our office to get help. Once your emergency is handled, you’re also welcome to stay with us for ongoing care if you’d like a calmer, curated dental home.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
Call us immediately—time matters. Gently rinse the tooth, try to place it back in the socket if possible, or store it in milk or saliva. Don’t scrub the root or let it dry out. Get to our office as quickly as you can; the best chance of saving a knocked-out tooth is within the first hour.
How much does emergency dental treatment cost?
Costs depend on what you need—an exam and X-rays only, a filling, an extraction, a crown, or infection treatment. We’ll explain all fees before we begin and help you use any available PPO insurance benefits. We also offer financing options, so you don’t have to delay urgent care because of cost.
Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?
Yes. We reserve time in our schedule for same-day emergency dental visits and will always do our best to see you quickly. Call as early in the day as you can so we have the most flexibility, and let us know you’re in pain or dealing with an urgent problem.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any situation with severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma that can’t wait for a regular appointment is a dental emergency. This includes severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, broken teeth causing pain, large swellings, or injuries to your gums, lips, or tongue. If you’re unsure, call us, and we’ll help you decide how urgent it is.
